How Yoga Helps Build Better Companies

As a Corporate Yoga instructor for six years, I have witnessed first hand the physical and mental stress of employees spending all day seated, working long hours and trying to meet continual deadlines.
They come to me with physical ailments such as neck, back, hip and shoulder pain along with headaches, trouble sleeping, digestive issues. Most always these complaints are followed by “I am so stressed”.
Yoga focuses on healing and renewing all parts of the person – body, mind and spirit.
A study in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health found that 20 minutes of Hatha Yoga stimulates the brain function more than walking or jogging on the treadmill for the same amount of time.
An article in the The Huffington Post in May of 2014 titled “Can Yoga Save the Business World” listed the immediate benefits of yoga in the workplace.
- Yoga releases tension in the physical body by opening tight, clenched muscles and improves blood flow to the brain.
- Yoga creates a clear mind and elevated thinking, helping people to get their work done more effectively and efficiently.
- Yoga allows people to unplug and disconnect from the endless tornado of thoughts.
- When the dust settles, priorities become clear, anxiety is reduced and the mind is calmer, more focused and compassionate.
The results in one of my companies, ARMA International were seen immediately by manager Jaci Conn. “Before we began yoga, the turnover rate for the last several years had been around two-thirds! Since adding yoga, only one staff member has left in the last 15 months!! We have over 75% of our staff participating in our classes. Aside from some dramatic weight loss, most of us find the greatest value in the incredible reduction in stress.”
The changes in the workplace can be measured and do impact not only the employees lives but the bottom line of all businesses. Happy, healthy people come to work ready to reach their goals for the day.
