Season 2011, Episode #34: “1000 Corks: The Best Wine Search Engine”

Sam Ockman will be discussing his wine search engine 1000 Corks. He’s also happy to discuss Open Source, Linux, Python, and the Cloud.

1000 Corks is a wine search engine. Type in the name of the wine you want to buy and it shows you which of over 500 stores in the United States sell that wine. For more common wines, this allows you to find the stores that have the best price, or to locate a wine at a store near you. 1000 Corks also makes it possible to track down harder to find wines – which might be only sold by one or two stores in the United States.

Sam Ockman was the founder, and former Chairman and CEO of Penguin Computing, the leading Linux server and scientific computing company in the United States.  Penguin Computing was recently added to the Inc. 5000 list, as one of the fastest growing private companies in the United States. It had $48.8 million revenue in 2010.

In addition to 1000 Corks, Sam runs a boutique Linux and Python consulting company, The Penguin and The Python.  He is one of the five people that coined the term Open Source. Sam is also the creator of the blog aggregator Chilean Start-Ups.
