For the past 15 years, Tom Vaughan has excelled in software development having built on-demand movie rental systems, two-factor authentication systems for the web, secure Internet proxies, and advanced space-based communication frameworks at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
In 2011, he created Rentalita, the startup with which he applied and was accepted to Start-Up Chile as part of the first generation. Rentalita, a startup whose objective is to facilitate the housing rental process, asks renters to fill out a one-time form which is then entered into a database used by real estate agents in order to easily manage each landlord and potential renter. This way, Rentalita helps renters and agents find the best rental alternative, without the complications of the traditional renting system– thus eliminating the need for each renter to fill out applications for every single the property they wish to call home.
According to Tom, the “single-best thing to happen” in his Start-Up Chile story, thus far, lies in the relationship he’s fostered with Alex Harasic, his Director of Business Development. A Civil Engineer from Chile, he joined Tom after seeing an ad in Start-Up Chile’s job portal seeking someone “to get a couple of meetings and put together a contract or two,” says Tom. He adds that “Alex went well above and beyond this job description. He took ownership and a level of responsibility that was totally unexpected, and very much appreciated. He created a whole new business model and marketing plan that has completely transformed Rentalita.”
After just a month of working together, Tom decide to make Alex an equal partner in Rentalita saying: “Start-Up Chile’s mission is to inspire the Chilean entrepreneurial ecosystem. But each day I am inspired by Alex’s enthusiasm, dedication, and generosity. We’re a true Start-Up Chile success story.”
