At the La Moneda Palace (akin to the White House), the Start-Up Chile entrepreneurs along with the Geeks on a Plane and Endeavor Chile, met with Chilean President Sebastian Piñera to celebrate entrepreneurship, innovation, and Chile’s reach towards becoming Latin America’s pole of innvation. Accompanied by the Minister of Economy, Juan Andrés Fontaine, the Executive VP of the Chilean Economic Development Agency (Corfo), Hernán Cheyre, and Jean Boudeguer, Start-Up Chile’s Executive Director, the Head of State received nearly 100 entrepreneurs, investors, and bloggers on the patio of La Moneda.
There, President Piñera reaffirmed his compromise with economic growth stating: “We cannot arrive late to this new revolution of information and knowledge where innovation, entrepreneurship, science, and technology are the central components.” Adding, “we have opened our country, not only to develop and incentivize Chilean innovation and entrepreneursship, but also to invite the world to come to Chile to try their luck.”
As the founder of Geeks on a Plane and 500startups, Dave McClure gave a short speech to the eager onlookers, talking about the strides Chile is making to become a bustling hub of entrepreneurship and innovation especially accelerating entrepreneurship via economic support in the design, metrics, and distribution areas. The Geeks on a Plane, having selected Santiago as one of this year’s touch-down points, have met intensively with both local and international entrepreneurs during their two days in the country’s capital.
Start-Up Chile participants left La Moneda glowing, inspired by the weight the program has on the local ecosystem, not to mention swooning, “I got the formal kiss on both cheeks!” said Li Chiao, a designer part of Knowledgestreem.
