As announced by the globe traversing organization, AppCircus, the top 20 global apps from their 2011 World Tour have been announced, one of which being The Social Radio, a 2nd Generation Start-Up Chile participant from Argentina. Each selected startup is invited to pitch live for Best App of the Year at the 6th Annual Mobile Premier Awards (MPA) on February 27th, in Barcelona– which happens to coincide with the Mobile World Congress. The MPA is the largest open global cross-platform app competition in the mobile industry.

The Social Radio and the other 19 applications “were selected by an international jury of mobile industry heavyweights, including experts from Facebook, Twitter and Mozilla out of 47 other AppCircus World Tour winners from 26 countries world-wide,” comments the MPA. Amongst the finalists, were emerging and established app developers from Brazil, Germany, Kenya, Romania, South Africa, United Kingdom, the United States, and, of course, Argentina.

Roberto Gluck, one of The Social Radio’s founders, says that “it’s such a big honor for us to be competing with other great apps like Touchy Books, The Hand and TagWhat.”

As the second group of Start-Up Chile’s second generation, 67 new startups comprised of 130 people from 33 different countries arrived to Chile on January 16th to begin participating in our governmentally-backed accelerator program.

The week commenced with a speech by Start-Up Chile’s executive director, Jean Boudeguer, about what the entrepreneurs should expect during their 6+ month stay in the country which was then followed by two days of basic workshops about how to receive the capital, the Return Value Agenda, and Start-Up Chile communications. In the afternoons the entrepreneurs were taken by our staff to process all of their international visas that permit them to work in Chile for one year.

Wednesday and Thursday provided the main opportunity for everyone to pitch each of their projects– approximately 50 of the new startups presented to their attentive peers.

Daniel Ponce, a Bolivian entrepreneur adds, “I think something that we really appreciate is the opportunity to be surrounded by people who in some way share the vision to create great things and make big changes.”

When asked what is best about being a part of Start-Up Chile, Arik Meyer from Germany stated: “lots of inspiring discussions with like-minded entrepreneurs and an overall positive atmosphere.”

Welcome to Chile everyone!

GymPact, a first generation Start-Up Chile participant, has recently been selected as one of 13 startups who will participate in the 2012 session of TechStarts in Boston. Founded by Yifan Zhang and Geoff Oberhofer, the startup is a way to incentivize people to maintain their gym-going goals, penalizing and rewarding them monetarily if they succeed in their “pacts.”

As part of TechStars, the startup will receive a USD$100k convertible note along with associated services that amount to nearly another $100k.

The team behind TechStars comments that “we had so many great companies apply that it was unbelievably hard to pick just ten. So we decided to invest in thirteen.”

“We chose a diverse set of companies: from e-commerce to education, financial markets to transportation, consumer mobile to B2B enterprise SaaS. These companies will help you crunch big data, raise a venture capital fund, track your documents, publish a book, and buy music. They will make your kids smarter, make you better at sports, and yes, even make you happier,” they add.

Other startups chosen as part of the 2012 TechStars Boston class include: bisonalternatives.com, libboo.com, psykosoft.net, zagster.com, testive.com, simplygood.com, doctrackr.com, murfie.com, mortardata.com, ubersense.com, shopsy.com, and lessonsmith.com.

Congrats GymPact!

The team behind Babelverse, the world’s first real-time on-demand interpretation service, announced today that they will translate President Obama’s address in real-time to viewers around the world in 6,976 languages. Founded by Mayel de Borniol (France) and Josef Dunne (UK), the startup participated in Start-Up Chile’s first generation and were awarded top honours at LeWeb’11, the internationally renowned technology conference based in Paris, France.

”Barack Obama’s address this evening touches more than just folks from the United States,” says Dunne, who co-founded Babelverse in Athens, Greece. “The outcome of the address has a direct bearing on the lives of individuals across the globe, and we would like it to be accessible to the 7 billion citizens of the world, no matter what their native tongue is.”

Josef and Mayel originally created the application as a way to improve communication during international rescue and relief operations in the aftermath of the 2011 Japanese Tsunami.

The speech will air this Tuesday, January 24th at 9:00pm EST and can be streamed at http://stateoftheunion.babelverse.com. English speakers capable of translating to the various languages of the world can volunteer their time during the address at http://stateoftheunion.babelverse.com.
